In Xalapa’s surrounding areas you’ll find various recreational areas, such as parks, lakes and gardens. You also can visit a botanical garden where they carry out research and wildlife conservation programs to protect to the region’s indigenous plant species.

Parque Benito Juarez. Located between the streets of Juan de la Luz Enriquez and J.J. Herrera, in the Colonia Centro. This is the city’s oldest garden and it is famous for it araucaria trees. It also has a cultural center where you can see artistic events, exhibits and movies.

Paseo de los Lagos. Located in Xalapa’s Zona Universitaria at a site that what was once a dam for a textile company in the 19th century. Here you’ll find three lakes that are ideal for row boating. Parque Los Tecajetes. Located on Av. Avila Camacho. Covering an area of about 3 hectares (7 acres), this is one of the city’s most beautiful parks. You can do numerous outdoor recreational activities here.

Jardin Botanico Clavijero (Clavijero Botanical Garden). Located at Km 2.5 on the old highway to Coatepec, south of the city of Xalapa. This 8-hectare (20-acre) garden has more than 6,000 examples of 700 regional plant species. In addition, research and wildlife conservation programs are carried out here. Open daily from 9:00 to 5:00.
