The predominating architectural style in Veracruz is neoclassic. Walking along the streets reminds one of the city’s splendid history.

Zocalo. Located in the heart of the port, it’s known for its beautiful buildings and famous arches. It’s also called the Plaza de la Constitucion. The open-air theater stages various cultural events. On Thursday and Saturday afternoons you’ll see couples dancing danzon to the rhythm of marimbas.

Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Asuncion (Cathedral). Located on Avenida Independencia, at the corner of Mario Molina, near the Plaza de la Constitucion, in the Historic Center. This building dates back to the 17th century. The structure has several naves, a neoclassic main altar and a series of sculptures.

San Juan de Ulua. Located 15 minutes from the city of Veracruz. This fort was built during the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the port from pirate attacks. Many years later it was used as a prison. Today, it is an important museum. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 to 4:30.

Edificios de Telegrafos y Correos (post office and telegraph buildings). Located on Marina Mercante Avenue. These neoclassical-style buildings with French architectural influences are part of a group of structures that were built during the Porfirio Diaz administration in order to improve the port.

Edificio de la Ex Aduana. Located on Marina Mercante Avenue, near the Registro Civil. This old customs edifice built by Salvador Echegaray blends neoclassic and local architectural styles. It is protected by a wall that faces the ocean.
