In Tuxtla Gutierrez’s environs you can go hiking along trails that leads to caverns with impressive cave paintings. In the caverns, which are covered with stalagmites and stalactites, you can go cave diving. If that’s not your thing, you can go rappelling down the cliffs of one of the most imposing canyons in the nation.

Sima de las Cotorras. Located 44 km (27 mi) west of Tuxtla Gutierrez. This impressive circular abyss is 140 meters (462 feet) deep and 160 meters (528 feet) in diameter. It is surrounded by lush vegetation, which is home to a large parakeet population. In this area you can go rappelling down the walls of the pit or you can check out nearby cave paintings.

El Chorreadero Waterfall. Located in Chiapa de Corzo, more than 20 km (14 mi) east of Tuxtla Gutierrez, off Highway 190. At this 25-meter (82-foot) waterfall you’ll find a wide cavern covered with calcareous stalactite and stalagmite formations. It is the ideal spot for cave diving. You also can check out the natural pools and a cave at the base of the waterfall, or you can go rappelling down the waterfall’s rocky cliffs.

Cañon del Sumidero National Park. Located more than 20 km (14 mi) north of Tuxtla Gutierrez. This natural area covers 21,789 hectares (53,818 acres). It has some of Mexico’s oldest geological formations and some of its most relevant sites due to their ecological, historical and archaeological importance. At this park you’ll find cliffs that are 1300 meters (4,290 feet) high, which are ideal for rock climbing. At the top you’ll get a 20-km (14-mi) view of the canyon..
