In
addition to
being one
of the
nation’s best
examples of
baroque architecture,
the Santa Prisca
Church has an
interesting legend
behind it.
It is
said that
during the
construction of
the 18th-century
church, the
clear sky
gave way
to dark
rain clouds
and a lightning
storm ensued.
As the story
goes, lightning
bolts struck
the church’s
dome and left
a momentary
inscription that
said: Glory
to God in
heaven and
peace on
earth to
men of
good will.
The strange
phenomenon caused
fear among
those present,
so they summoned
the Virgin
Mary for
protection. Much
to their
surprise, she
appeared above
the church
with the
lightning bolts
in her hands..
