In San Blas and its surrounding areas there are various places where you can observe flora and fauna or go on photo safaris while you enjoy a peaceful walk along nature trails.

La Tobara. Located in the city of San Blas, 2 km (1.2 mi) from the port. Freshwater and salt water come together here to form a river with lagoons and navigable estuary canals. This is the ideal location to observe such plant species as lilies, orchids, fig trees and ferns. As for animals, you’ll see herons, cormorants, parakeets, parrots, doves and turtledoves, among other species. Open daily from 8:00 to 6:00.

Parque Nacional Isla Isabel (Isabel Island National Park). Lies 74 km (46 mi) northwest of San Blas by boat. This is one of Mexico’s most important ecological reserves, thanks to its biodiversity. It’s also the breeding grounds of diverse marine birds, including frigate birds, booby birds, the red-billed tropicbird and seagulls, among other species.

Isla de Mexcaltitan (Mexcaltitan Island). Located 90 km (56 mi) south of San Blas, off Highway 54. This is a great place to observe birds throughout the year, particularly in the winter. It is home to such species as herons, kingfishers, black-bellied whistling ducks and egrets, among others.

La Bajada. Located 25 km (15 mi) south of San Blas. This singular town offers countless sites to observe birds and enjoy photo safaris.

La Manzanilla. Located 20 km (14 mi) southeast of San Blas, off Highway 54. The lowland jungle vegetation here makes it the ideal place to observe plant and animal species or go on a photo safari..
