In Puerto Escondido’s surrounding areas you’ll find a town called
San Pedro Mixtepec, which lies 19 km (12 mi) north of Puerto
Escondido, off Highway 135. Locals call this town the home of the
Virgen de Juquila (Virgin of Juquila). They say it was there, in
Oaxaca’s Mixteca region, where the Virgin Mary appeared to ask the
residents to build a church. So it is that on Dec. 8, pilgrims visit
the church to give thanks to the Virgin and to ask her for favors.
The faithful and devout firmly believe that their prayers will be
answered at this important religious site...
