In Puerto Escondido’s surrounding areas you’ll find a town called San Pedro Mixtepec, which lies 19 km (12 mi) north of Puerto Escondido, off Highway 135. Locals call this town the home of the Virgen de Juquila (Virgin of Juquila). They say it was there, in Oaxaca’s Mixteca region, where the Virgin Mary appeared to ask the residents to build a church. So it is that on Dec. 8, pilgrims visit the church to give thanks to the Virgin and to ask her for favors. The faithful and devout firmly believe that their prayers will be answered at this important religious site...
