At the archaeological zones in Puebla’s surrounding areas, you can learn about the splendor of Mexico’s pre-classic era. As you visit the ruins of this great civilization, the view of the nearby Malinche Volcano will leave you fascinated.

Cholula Archaeological Zone – Located 8 km (5 mi) from Puebla, along the so-called Quetzalcoatl route. Known as the oldest city in the Americas, this site has seven superimposed pyramids. One of the most impressive structures is the pyramid that was built to honor Chiconahui Quiahuitl, which has a 400-meter (1,320-foot) base, making it the largest foundation in the world. At the site’s museum you’ll see replicas of the so-called butterfly wall and wall of drinkers, as well as a model of the pyramid group. Open daily from 10:00 to 4:30.

Cantona – Located 92 km (57 mi) northwest of Puebla, off Highway 129 in the direction of Libres. This archaeological site, which is 12 square kilometers, is one of the largest pre-Hispanic cities in Mesoamerica. It is divided into three urban units, where you’ll find the Acropolis, which has more than 3,000 individual patios and 24 ball courts, among other structures. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 to 5:00..
