Oaxaca City’s environs provide a wide variety of idyllic scenery for mountain biking or a hot-air balloon ride. In Oaxaca City, Tlacolula, Teotitlan and Hierve el Agua you’ll find tour companies that organize these thrilling adventures.

Tlacolula – Located 33 km (20 mi) southeast of Oaxaca City off Highway 190 in the direction of Istmo. At this place, or in the city of Oaxaca, you can inquire about hot-air balloon rides. From high above you’ll get a beautiful panoramic view of the Tlacolula Valley and its surrounding areas.

Parque Nacional Benito Juarez (Benito Juarez National Park) – Located 7 km (4 mi) north of Oaxaca City off Highway 190. This national park covers 2,737 hectares (6,760 acres), including the Cerro del Fortin, which hosts the annual regional dances of La Guelaguetza. The rugged geography at this national park makes it ideal for downhill mountain bike runs. This has become a very popular spot among biking enthusiasts.

Teotitlan del Valle – Located 27 km (17 mi) southeast of Oaxaca City off Highway 190. At this place you’ll find various trails surrounded by farm lands. The paths offer an excellent view of the sierras that encircle Oaxaca’s central valleys, making it ideal for mountain biking.

Hierve el Agua This place forms part of a bicycle route that begins in Oaxaca City. It passes through some main tourist sights in the city’s surrounding areas, including el Arbol de Tule (Tule Tree), the archaeological zone of Mitla and the Roaguia mezcal distilleries...
