Morelia is a city that plays a significant role in promoting Mexico’s cultural and artistic values, making it an important center of intellectual activity. So it’s hardly surprising that some of the main cultural events held in Morelia draw important international names. Among the main activities that take place are:

The Morelia International Music Festival – This is a main event that has allowed Morelia to become one of the nation’s top cultural centers. Created in honor of the illustrious Michoacan-born composer Miguel Bernal Jimenez, the festival brings together the finest in music and culture from Mexico and abroad. Developed at the request of Las Rosas Conservatory, one of Morelia’s most prestigious academic institutions, the festival takes place in the middle of November. Concerts are held in various venues, such as the Teatro Morelos del Centro de Convenciones y Exposiciones de Morelia.

The Monarch Butterfly Cultural Festival – Held in the natural sanctuaries of the monarch butterfly, 10 city governments in Michoacan, such as those of Zitacuaro and Angangueo, join forces to host an annual festival aimed at raising awareness about the conservation of the monarch butterfly’s habitat. The festival takes place in February and March and includes live music, dance and theatrical performances, workshops and exhibits. It coincides with the monarch butterfly’s final nesting stage in Michoacan’s oyamel forests.

The Morelia International Film Festival – Since 2003, Morelia has hosted an international contemporary film festival that has helped create opportunities for movie industries throughout the world. The festival has drawn important international figures, such as directors Werner Herzog, Manoel de Oliveira and Barbet Schroeder, among others. The event takes place in October at theaters in Morelia.

The Morelia Expo and Convention Center – Located on Calzada Ventura Puente, at Av. Camelinas, in the Felix Ireta neighborhood. This is considered one of the nation’s most complete conventions centers. It has magnificent facilities in the middle of a pleasant natural environment, making it a great place to hold all kinds of festivals and events.
