Morelia invites you to discover a wide variety of delicious regional fare from the state of Michoacan, which blends pre-Hispanic influences (drawing on ingredients such as corn, beans, squash, chile peppers, nopal, fruit and fish) with thousands of flavors derived from Spanish cuisine. One such example is the sopa tarasca, a creamy bean soup with spices, cheese, chile peppers, cream and fried tortilla strips. Cheese is one of the main ingredients in most of Michoacan’s dishes, particularly a variety known as Cotija (a farmer cheese). During your stay in Morelia, don’t forget to try the traditional corundas and uchepos (Purepechan-style tamales) and the tamales adobados. Other popular local fare includes enchiladas placeras, morisqueta (a rice, pork and chile pepper dish), and mole wrapped in avocado leaves. For dessert, indulge in ate de chayote and ates morelianos (candied fruit), cajeta de elote (a sweet made from tender corn), bread prepared with anise water, chongos zamoranos (sweet cheese pudding in syrup) and chilacayote squash bread. Finally, wash it all down with a golden spoon or tamarind atole (cornmeal beverages). Enjoy your meal....
