Mexico City is one of the
world’s capitals with the highest number of Catholic adherents,
which comes as a result of colonial influences in religion, which
are very much embedded in present-day religious practices. Among the
most important religious celebrations are: the pilgrimage to the
Basilica of Guadalupe, one of the most visited basilicas in the
world (second only to Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City). Each
year some 18 million pilgrims descend on the city to pay homage to
the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, to thank her for the favors
they have received and to ask her for miracles. Another important
event, the reenactment of the passion and death of Jesus Christ,
takes place at Iztapalapa’s Via Crucis. It begins on Holy Thursday
with the ritual of The Last Supper, and continues on to Good Friday
with the Crucifixion. About 2 million people witness this reenacted
event. The celebration, which requires rigorous spiritual
preparation, has taken place since the second half of the 19th
