The residents of Huatulco like to tell a famous story called The Legend of Santa Cruz. It tells of a bearded man dressed in a tunic who used to spend a great amount of time praying before a cross at the foot of a hill. Later, in 1587, when pirate Thomas Cavendish attacked the port and attempted to destroy it, he was turned back. Over time, people have prayed before the famed cross to ask for miracles. To this day, Santa Cruz draw thousands of pilgrims. Before they depart, the pilgrims take with them slivers of the cross, obviously leaving it very thin. Yet it still stands on the hill..
