Located 281 km (174 mi) south of border city Nogales in Mexico’s northwestern region, Hermosillo is the state capital of Sonora. The semi-desert climate is hot, with an average temperature of 25º C (77º F).

Known as Sun City, Hermosillo has splendid architectural attractions lined along its wide avenues, such as the Cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno. During your stay, you also can visit various museums like the state history museum. In addition, you can learn about the region’s diverse ethnic groups, including the Seris, Mayos and Yaquis. In the surrounding areas you’ll find precious nature reserves like the Centro Ecologico de Sonora, where environmentalists carry out wildlife conservation programs and conduct research on the region’s ecosystems. Also of interest is the Reserva Especial de la Biosfera Cajon del Diablo (Cajon del Diablo Special Biosphere Reserve). At these places you’ll see a wide array of indigenous plant and animal species, such as white-tailed deer and bighorn sheep.

At night, don’t forget to try the delicious mochomos (shredded beef or veal) and the tender Sonora-style meats. You also can indulge in excellent fish and seafood dishes on the beaches of Bahia Kino and San Carlos
