At the top of the Cerro del Cubilete, 31 km (19 mi) southwest of Guanajuato, stands the Santuario a Cristo Rey, where you’ll find a giant Christ statue constructed by Nicolas Mariscal in 1944. The monument, as evidenced by the materials used, is art deco style. Inside you’ll find a large metal crown that hangs above the altar and draws your attention to a dome ornamented with annulets and ribs. This is one of the most important and representative sanctuaries of the Catholic Church in Mexico and it receives a multitude of pilgrims every year. The Christ statue receives them with open arms and two angels at his feet, who are offering him royal and thorned crowns. From this spot you’re afforded an excellent view of the Bajio region...
