Guanajuato has a wide variety of delicious regional dishes, such as patitas de puerco (pig’s feet), pacholas guanajuatenses (ground beef patties), empanadas de carnitas (fried pork turnovers), bread from Acambaro, San Miguel-style cold cuts (served with meats, fruits and vegetables in oil and vinegar), and the classic enchiladas mineras (miners’ enchiladas). The most common beverages you’ll find are agua de betabel or cebadina (sweetened beet or barley water), licor de fresa (strawberry liqueur) and agua de mesquite (mesquite water). To top it off, indulge in some fresas de Irapuato con crema (strawberries in cream) or a gelatina cajeta (caramel gelatin). If you’d like to try some regional sweets, buy some cajetas de Celaya (caramel-based sweets from Celaya) and charamuscas, which are made with granulated and unrefined cane sugar. Other local favorites include jamoncillos (milk candy), pepitorias (made with wheat flour and pumpkin seeds), las alegrias (amaranth seed bars), las cocadas (coconut sweets) and frozen strawberries from Irapuato...
